Existing ERPs are largely incapable of supporting supply chain traceability
We continue to observe large gaps between the current capabilities and required capabilities for even the most basic supply chain traceability.
No where is this gap most observable than ERP software. ERPs are designed to support moving product forward towards the consumer to ensure money moves backward to the companies handling, processing and packaging fresh foods.
It's quite frustrating for clients to discover that their existing software platforms are wholly inadequate. SaaS provider claims fall short of what's really needed inside an operation. And finding near-term solutions often means introducing additional manual processes which ideally would be automated or assisted by software.
This makes traceability more expensive - in two ways. Initially with additional processes that add time and labor. And longer term with additional software that is needed to fill gaps in traceability capabilities and replace the manual processes and workarounds.
Yes global standards help. But if the system isn't deigned to use the standards it's just additional cost in labeling and data sharing that's not delivering value along the supply chain.
The ultimate goal is often regulatory compliance. But clients expect their software capabilities to enable them to take advantage of the opportunities supply chain traceability can provide.
